About the Purple Star Program

Purpose

The Purple Star Transition Program is designed to support military-connected students and their families as they transition into our school community. Recognizing the unique challenges associated with frequent relocations, this program provides intentional academic, social, and emotional support to ensure a smooth and welcoming transition.

Program Overview

Upon enrollment, military-connected students are identified through the registration process. The school’s designated Purple Star point of contact (school counselor or school social worker) coordinates transition supports tailored to each student’s needs.

Key Components of the Transition Program Include:

  • Welcome & Orientation Support: New military-connected students receive a welcome letter, school orientation, including a tour of the building, review of schedules, routines, and school expectations.
  • Peer Support: When appropriate, students are paired with a peer ambassador or buddy (Peer Helper Program) who assists with navigating the school environment, making social connections, and easing adjustment during the initial transition period.
  • Staff Check-Ins: The Purple Star point of contact conducts follow-up check-ins with students and families to monitor adjustment, address concerns, and connect families with school or community resources as needed.
  • Family Communication: Families receive welcome communication and ongoing support to ensure they understand school procedures, available services, and points of contact.
  • Collaboration & Monitoring: School staff collaborate to ensure academic placement, records transfer, and social-emotional needs are addressed. Transition supports are documented and adjusted based on student progress.

Ongoing Support

The Purple Star Transition Program is implemented throughout the school year as new military-connected students enroll. Supports are individualized and ongoing, with the goal of promoting student success, belonging, and continuity of learning.

Program Oversight

The program is overseen by the school’s Purple Star point of contact in collaboration with administration, teachers, counselors, and support staff.
